MS-203 Is Retired: What Exchange Online Admins Should Do Now
· Updated · microsoft certification
Status: Microsoft retired the MS-203 exam and the Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate certification on 29 December 2023. You can no longer take the exam or renew the certification, and Microsoft has not released a direct replacement. Be cautious of any site still selling MS-203 exam prep or "dumps".
This page used to be an MS-203 study guide. Because many people still search for MS-203, it now explains which messaging skills are still in demand, which current Microsoft certifications cover them, and how to build hands-on Exchange Online evidence for your CV.
If you already hold the Messaging Administrator Associate
Your achievement remains part of your Microsoft Learn certification history, but the credential cannot be renewed. Check your status on your Microsoft Learn profile. On your CV, list it with the year you earned it and pair it with a current certification from the table below.
Exchange Online skills that still matter
The job is still very much alive. Organisations running Microsoft 365 still need people who can do the following:
- Recipients and mailboxes: user, shared, and resource mailboxes, distribution and Microsoft 365 groups, mailbox permissions such as Full Access, Send As, and Send on Behalf.
- Mail flow: accepted domains, connectors, mail flow (transport) rules, and MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records.
- Troubleshooting: message trace, delivery reports, non-delivery report (NDR) codes, and quarantine review.
- Protection: Exchange Online Protection anti-spam and anti-malware policies, plus Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Safe Links, Safe Attachments, and anti-phishing.
- Compliance: retention policies, litigation hold, and eDiscovery in Microsoft Purview.
- Hybrid and migration: the Hybrid Configuration Wizard, and cutover, staged, hybrid, and IMAP migrations.
Which Microsoft certification to take instead
| Certification | Why it fits a messaging admin | Note |
|---|---|---|
| MS-102: Microsoft 365 Administrator | Covers tenant administration, identity, security, and compliance across Microsoft 365. It is the closest to a broad M365 admin role. | Microsoft lists MS-102 as scheduled to retire on 30 Nov 2026. Take it only if you can sit before then. |
| SC-401: Information Security Administrator | Microsoft Purview data loss prevention, sensitivity labels, and retention. These are the compliance side of email. | Live SC-401 training |
| SC-200: Security Operations Analyst | Defender XDR, including Defender for Office 365 investigation of phishing and malicious email. | Live SC-200 training |
| SC-300: Identity and Access Administrator | Microsoft Entra ID identity, conditional access, and MFA, which every mailbox depends on. | Live SC-300 training |
| MS-700: Teams Administrator | Collaboration administration, a natural extension for messaging admins. | Live MS-700 training |
Microsoft changes its certification portfolio often. Confirm the current status on the Microsoft retired certification exams page before you book.
Build hands-on Exchange Online evidence
Without a messaging certification, hands-on evidence carries more weight in interviews. Use a Microsoft 365 trial or test tenant you are authorised to administer, and document each lab with screenshots and notes:
- Connect with the Exchange Online PowerShell module (
Connect-ExchangeOnline) and inventory mailboxes withGet-EXOMailbox. - Create shared and resource mailboxes and assign Full Access and Send As permissions.
- Add a custom domain and publish SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. Verify them and explain what each record prevents.
- Build a mail flow rule, such as an external-sender disclaimer or blocking an attachment type, and test it.
- Trace a message with
Get-MessageTraceV2(the successor toGet-MessageTrace) and interpret an NDR. - Configure anti-phishing and Safe Links policies if your licence includes Defender for Office 365, and review quarantine.
- Apply a retention policy and a litigation hold, then run a basic Purview eDiscovery search.
PrepKloud's Microsoft 365 messaging projects give you three structured labs: core implementation, operations and troubleshooting, and a portfolio capstone. They remain useful for Exchange Online skills even though the exam has retired.

FAQ
Is the MS-203 exam retired?
Yes. Microsoft retired the MS-203 exam and the Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate certification on 29 December 2023. The exam can no longer be taken and the certification cannot be renewed.
Is there a replacement for MS-203?
Microsoft has not released a direct one-to-one replacement. Messaging-related skills are now spread across certifications such as MS-102 (Microsoft 365 Administrator, scheduled to retire 30 Nov 2026), SC-401 (Information Security Administrator), SC-200 (Security Operations Analyst), and SC-300 (Identity and Access Administrator).
Is my Messaging Administrator Associate certification still valid?
It remains in your Microsoft Learn certification history but cannot be renewed. Check its current status on your Microsoft Learn profile and pair it with a current certification on your CV.
Are Exchange Online skills still in demand?
Yes. Organisations on Microsoft 365 still need administrators for mailboxes, mail flow, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, message tracing, email protection, retention, and migrations, even without a dedicated messaging certification.
Which certification should an Exchange administrator take now?
For broad Microsoft 365 administration, consider MS-102 if you can sit it before its scheduled retirement on 30 Nov 2026. For longer-term value, SC-401 covers Purview compliance, SC-200 covers Defender for Office 365 investigations, and SC-300 covers identity.
How can I prove Exchange Online skills without MS-203?
Build documented labs in an authorised test tenant: mailbox and permission setup, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, mail flow rules, message trace troubleshooting, protection policies, and retention holds. Present them as a portfolio in interviews.
